- As a result of the weakening of the rupee, the CAA announced rationalizing airport charges.
- The previous rate was $20 and the rate has now been rationalized to RS.2800 per passenger.
- The other charges; parking, power supplies, terminal navigation, and boarding have been ended.
The Civil Aviation Authority has announced rationalizing airport charges, passengers would now be required to pay airport tax in rupees instead of dollars.
The authority’s directives come as a result of the persistent weakening of the rupee against the greenback.
The passengers were burdened after rising and fall off in value of the dollar so the CAA decided to charge the amount in Pakistani rupees, CAA spokesperson told.
Earlier, passengers were required to pay $20 and the rate has now been rationalized to RS.2800 per passenger on international departures.
CAA claimed that the proposed change had been put into immediate effect to ensure passengers had to face no further inconvenience.
After finalizing an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a loan program, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) let the rupee depreciate massively in the inter-bank market.
The CAA has also taken over the responsibility of collecting the cargo throughput charges. CAA revenue will be boosted through a collection of charges.
Earlier, CAA had signed a contract with a private company for the collection of the throughput charges.
But after receiving complaints against the private company, the CAA has terminated the contract. The company was also allegedly charging exorbitant rates on the import of goods.
The staff of CAA has been deployed by CAA itself the task and senior officials are monitoring the process. The CAA had issued several tenders for the task but no company had expressed its interest.
The previous formula for the imposition of the throughput charges on imported goods was quite complex. Now, the process is simply made. Importers will not have to pay additional charges now.
Under the new aviation policy, the CAA recently ended the aeronautical charges on the local flights at all the airports.
Prime Minister Imran Khan took the major decision for the revival of the aviation industry. The decision will be beneficial for local flight operators. Furthermore, the charges for parking, power supplies, terminal navigation, and boarding were also ended.
