On Sunday, the minister for Tourism, Atif Khan inaugurated the Margalla Ridge Trail and walking track at Margalla Hills National Park.

Inauguration ceremony:

The inauguration of the trail was held at the visitors’ information center and attended by:

  • KP Minister for Youth Affairs, Tourism and Culture Atif Khan
  • The KP Tourism Secretary, Mr. Aziz
  • The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad’s (MCI) director general environment
  • Representatives of the Islamabad Wildlife Board
  • Civil society members and environmentalists

Longest trail of the country:

Margalla Ridge Trail is the longest trail between Margalla Hills Park, Islamabad and Haripur District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is 44-kilometer long.

The trail is developed for visitors and tourists. According to officials, over 35-kilometer track lies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz said that round 15km of the trail sits within the capital’s territory. The remaining will passes through the Abbottabad and Haripur districts.

He said that Margalla Hills are the main feature of Islamabad’s natural beauty. People from all over the world visit the hills.

The Margalla Ridge Trail will bring more tourists to Islamabad and will promote tourism activities in the city.

“We have revamped the trail, due to which it will become a huge attraction for tourists,” he said.

It will take two or three days to get from one end to another. There will be stops throughout the trail so that the tourists can camp.

The master plan by KP government:

It is a master plan by the KP government to develop new tourist sites under which 10 tourist destinations are included. Kalam, Kumrat and Nathiagali would be restored on modern lines.

The Minister said the Kumrat tourist spot would be developed as a national park. It will attract more tourists to showcase the province as a tourism brand to the world.

Pakistan is blessed with the natural beauty and the KP government is working to identify and explore new destinations where tourism would be promoted.

Development of Margalla Ridge Trail is a commendable effort and it will promote tourism. The officials said that KP government will provide more facilities to the people hiking this trail as its larger portion falls within its limits.
