Cabinet Approves New Constitution of Pakistan Cricket Board
- Regional cricket will now be focused as the federal cabinet has approved the new PCB constitution.
- From U-16 to first-class cricket, six teams will be representing their respective provinces on the domestic circuit.
- Under the new constitution, the powers of chairman and chief executive have been separated.
The federal cabinet has approved the new constitution of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and decided to promote regional cricket.
The federal cabinet met with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair and approved the restructuring of the domestic cricket set-up.
After the cabinet meeting, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan said:
“Finally, restructuring of cricket is done after 40 years. The focus will now be on promoting regional cricket.”
“The cabinet also decided that special focus will be given on blind and women cricket. It was decided that there is no need to promote veterans cricket rather resources will be spent on youth.”
The Restructuring Plan:
PM Imran Khan had earlier floated the idea to dissolve departmental cricket. It means that now, the departments will no longer field their own teams but sponsor each of the six regional teams.
In the new restructuring plan, there will be six regional teams on the domestic circuit; two teams of Punjab, and one each from Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Federal Areas cricket associations. The new plan will end the current domestic cricket set-up comprising 16 regional bodies.
The city-level associations will continue to work to feed their players to the provincial teams and to play ‘B’ grade cricket.
Under the new plan, presidents of three cricket associations will be part of the PCB Board of Governors, whereas, two members will be appointed by the Prime Minister. These two members will act as the patron-in-chief of the PCB. Besides four independent directors, one woman will also be part of the PCB.
PM Imran Khan to Promote Regional Cricket:
Prime Minister Imran Khan has been showing his desire to bring structural improvement in the PCB to promote regional cricket.
Earlier in April, this matter was presented before the PCB Board of Governors but the cricket board faced a setback as the majority of the members of Board of Governor opposed the idea of abolishing departmental teams in domestic cricket.
PM had asked 17 departments to help the cricket board in setting up the new domestic system. Later on the directions of PM Imran Khan, the cricket board prepared proposals for making changes in the PCB constitution which were approved now.
The new constitution has abolished the existing domestic structure having city-based regional departments. The PCB also decided to provide initial funding to the cricket associations, with the departments given the right to refuse sponsorship.
The body would start moving towards the new constitution once it receives the relevant ministry’s formal notification.
